Heavy rain and wind affect Waikato overnight

11 June 2014, 05:22 AM

Heavy rain and wind have been affecting the Waikato region overnight, particularly on the Coromandel, and are expected to continue this morning before easing towards noon.

Rivers are especially swollen near Thames, with state highway 25 south of the town expected to be closed due to a system allowing Kauaeranga River flooding to spill across the road.

The high tide due at 5.30am, expected to be higher than normal, may aggravate any river flooding near the coast.

People should take extreme care on the roads around Coromandel, including near Thames, on the Thames Coast Rd, and state highway 25 at Hikuai.

Beware of the potential for surface flooding, slips and debris on roads right across the peninsula and in the Waikato region generally.
